The challenge

Etheridge Shire Council needed a new 20 m high earthfill dam on the Delaney River near Forsayth, built in remote country against a changing political landscape.

What was delivered

  • Delivered by Glenn as Senior Project Manager during his time with LDI Constructions
  • Constructed a multi-zoned earthfill embankment around 20 m high, with a clay core and chimney and blanket filters
  • Placed upstream and downstream rock protection
  • Excavated the embankment cut-off trench through rock, and backfilled it
  • Sourced and placed embankment materials to meet tight specifications
  • Managed a scarce supply of construction water throughout the works
  • Built a temporary bywash to carry wet-season flows safely through the site
  • Installed dam monitoring instrumentation, including piezometers, seepage weirs and settlement points

The outcome

Glenn saw the project through from the start of construction to completion in 2021. Charleston Dam, a Category 1 referable dam on the Delaney River, now gives Forsayth and Georgetown a reliable water supply with capacity to meet future demand.
